Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University is a higher education institution in Batumi, the capital of the autonomous republic of Adjara. It was named after the mediaeval Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli.
The Georgian community has long worked to construct and strengthen Adjara's educational system. In 1893, there was a proposal to establish a boys' gymnasium in Batumi. On June 26-27, 1893, the Municipality of the City gave 2 623, 95 square metres of land for the Boys' Gymnasium near the coast. Sedelnikov, a military engineer, created the concept.
